The Listening Space

The Listening Space – a truly inspiring new eco-therapy project/community space coming to Kentish Town

The team at Transition Kentish Town has been asked by the most wonderful, inspiring Camden doctor – Dr Jane Myat, from the Caversham NHS Group practice in NW5. Jane has asked us to collaborate on turning a really neglected, derelict huge courtyard to be found between Leighton Rd and Peckwater, NW5. The site has not been used for years, and is aimed at being turned into a bucolic garden that could really help patients, and bring the community together. Jane’s words of how many of her patients were victims of war, isolated folks, people cut off from society really spoke from the heart. We want to help her turn The Listening Space, into a place where she and her fellow doctors can listen to patients; a space where we can grow veg and fruit; herbs and plants which originate from as many places around the world as her patients come from. We are going to build a cob pizza oven for regular bread making. We want The Listening Space to provide a truly multi-cultural environment.

The Story

We are a group of NHS health professionals, artists and gardeners who are working together to build a community garden and therapeutic space to enrich the clinical work we do. Our daily practice has shown us the importance of connecting to each other: as doctors, patients and colleagues, to the natural environment and to the food we eat. We recognise how difficult this can be.

Our purpose is to provide a safe and convivial outdoor space to improve physical and mental wellbeing by providing opportunities to increase activity, social networks, skills and confidence. The project specifically aims to benefit those in our community who find it difficult to access other services and for those where no other provision exists.

We hope we can count on your help and support to raise the funds for the initial groundwork to launch our scheme. Here is the link to the crowdfunding page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/thelisteningspace

Many thanks in advance to anyone would like to contribute – there is no obligation but if you would like to contribute, however small the amount, it will all make a difference….and if you feel able to spread the word via your facebook pages that would be fab!

For starters, Saturday November 19th has been earmarked as the ‘Big Dig’ day when we plan to have a big tidy up, bring in manure, plant some bare rooted fruit trees and other things depending on funds raised. I hope you will agree that this is a good opportunity for us all to be involved in something creative and positive and improve our working environment in the process.

Many thanks

GP Jane
