Cottage Garden arrives at Kentish Town Station

Six wooden planters were constructed by volunteers. Structures for the plants were made with coppiced wood from Hampstead Heath and everyone got to work filling, digging and planting the containers up with butterfly and bee attracting plants. Structures for the plants were made with coppiced wood from Hampstead Heath and everyone got to work filling, digging and planting the containers up with butterfly and bee attracting plants.

The wildlife friendly plants include foxgloves, phlox, rudbeckia, echinacea, veronicastrum, yarrow, climbing rose, honeysuckle, runner beans and even peppers!

Passing passengers are encouraged to crop any ripe fruit or vegetables. Watch out for seasonal gatherings to celebrate and renew the planters in our newsletter, and please help with the watering.

None of this would have been possible if it weren’t for all the lovely volunteers! Thanks to Transition Kentish TownCamden Air ActionKentish Town Neighbourhood Forum and Of Butterflies & Bees for all their hard work; and also to Govia, the Thameslink operator, and Camden Council who backed and funded the project 50:50 and Network Rail.

The platform garden is one part of a broader project “to create pollution-busting green spaces along Kentish Town Road” as part of a Trail of Wellbeing. Studies have shown that “exposure to nature provides a wide range of health benefits”.
